Guest Post: How I Fell in Love with Running

Hey guys, I’m actually en route to NY today (with a 9 hour layover in Chi-town to hang out with one of my best friends/bridesmaids Katie), so one of my online buddies, Chelsea, was kind enough to write a guest post for me. I could totally do a post during my layover, but Katie and I will probably be sitting on a patio somewhere drinking beer and heckling passersby. I’m so excited to have her as my FIRST guest blogger, so make sure you check out her blog as well!
Hi, my name is Chelsea, and I blog over at The Dancing Runner. I am so excited to be doing a guest post for my blogging/food swapping/instagramming buddy Jen!
I am going to tell you a love story. It’s not one that you hear everyday. This is one about my affair with hitting the pavement. Getting up early, embracing the sunrise, and putting one foot in front of the other. Sweating and taking time to clear your mind and jump start the day. Some runners you will meet have been running for years, and ran track throughout high school and college. Not me. I wasn’t always the avid runner and fitness junkie. Quite the opposite, actually. I took ballet, tap and jazz dance classes as a young girl but that’s about the extent of it.
In high school, I wrote for the school paper and was in the choir. Academics was my thing. Athletics, not so much.
I went off to college, and got introduced to the Freshman 15 (more like the Freshman 25 or 30). Endless nights of partying, drinks and pizza packed on the pounds. I had to do something about it. Being the chubby girl was not so fun.
I joined Weight Watchers my sophomore year of college and began working out. I would leisurely run on the treadmill, no more than 3 or 4 miles at a time. I would do Tae Bo tapes in my dorm room (yes I said TAPES…as in VHS), whatever would get me moving whenever. Slowly the weight began to come off, and then some. Over the course of a year I had dropped 50 pounds. I graduated college a happier, healthier individual.
Post college and going into the working world I had a desk job where I wouldn’t get up for hours at a time…I also started working overnight. Those late night hours seriously take a toll on your body. At this point I was still running off and on, mostly on the treadmill. I would go to the gym during the day, and bust it out for as long as I could before I got tired. Sooner or later I was running up to 6 or 7 miles at a time! It was so fun to up my mileage like that. It also did wonders for my mood.
3 years into my career at said overnight desk job, I got hit with a layoff. It was a devastating feeling but also a blessing in disguise. I finally had my life back! I found out about a local running store in the area that I lived in that had weekly social runs and started going to them. Running outside, this was new to me! The first few times I ran with the group, I was a lot slower than everyone. But still, running and being in the camaraderie of others was awesome. One day someone told me about the store’s half marathon training program. The idea intrigued me. I went to the orientation to check it out. Wow, 13.1 miles…I thought to myself. That sure is a lot. Quite intimidating, actually. But I’m just going to do it and we’ll just see what happens. I had more drive and motivation than ever before, and the Saturday long runs with the group was huge motivation. In the fall of 2009, I completed my very first half marathon. It was such a feeling of accomplishment.
The half marathon was a stepping stone to train for a full marathon. In 2010, I ran the Chicago Marathon with my teammates. 26.2 miles done.
Fast forward to today. I have run 4 full marathons, more halfs than I can count, and am training for my 5th race, the Marine Corps Marathon in DC this October. I also coach the same running group that I joined and have become a fitness instructor teaching dance classes at the gym. I have to say that falling in love with running has changed my life for the better, and I have made some lifelong friends through the sport.

Today, running serves a different purpose for me. It really is not all about racing or training for marathons all the time. It’s about getting up with the sunrise, putting one foot in front of the other, and clearing my thoughts. Every run is not perfect or amazing. Just having this ability to run, something that some may not be able to do for whatever reason, means everything to me. I am thankful for every mile, every drop of sweat, and every minute I have to give it all I’ve got. This love of mine will surely last a lifetime, and I’m in it for the long haul.

Thanks, Chelsea!

Weekend things

Yesterday, I wore real clothes. Like, no trace of Lululemon was on my body. I don’t know what possessed me. (Ok, that’s a lie. I went to the gym first thing in the morning, so I had to wear some Lulu. And if you’re wondering, my workout was treadmill intervals for 35 minutes followed by another 30 minutes of lower body and core exercises using the bosu and a body bar.)

The weekend would not be complete if Tyler and I didn’t make a trip to Home Depot. We picked up tons of supplies so he can strip and paint the bathroom cabinets while I’m gone (thank god, because I really didn’t want to help with that project).

We came home, and decided it was time to pick the first pepper from out patio garden.

We probably should have let it grow a bit more because it was BITTER. But we wanted to be able to enjoy the vegetables of our labor (get it, instead of fruits of our labor?! haha I’m funny) while I was still home. Chances are, Tyler is going to get stuck with everything ripening while I’m away. Looks like someone’s gonna be eating lots of tomatoes.

My second real outfit of the day was for our date night. The date night that had a slightly different twist of events.

So, we decided to check out a new-to-us restaurant. As we were walking in, I tripped on the entryway and completely sliced off the bottom of my big toe. (I immediately started to freakout because a.) I hate blood, and b.) I did this before in 4th grade. I was with my mom at a Montgomery Wards in Northern California- we were taking the escalator, and I was wearing flip flops, and tripped. It wasn’t until we had been walking around the second floor for a few minutes that I noticed a trail of blood behind me. My mom rushed me to the bathroom and I fainted. Awesome). Anyways.

So I had to tell the manager and ask for a bandaid. Oh, and I ruined my sandals because blood got all in the stitching.

Fast forward a bit, and Tyler’s steak came out terrible. He told the waiter, but decided to keep his entree because he didn’t want to wait for another to cook. Turns out the manager got wind of this and came to our table. He felt bad that on our first visit I had shed blood and Tyler’s steak had no blood. So, he discounted our meal and gave us a dessert on the house.

A very good dessert at that.

This AM, I got new luggage for my trip. Wa-HOO

And now, I mist fill said luggage. And do my homework (boo). And workout. And walk my puppy. And that is all.

PS: Fingers crossed the airport security doesn’t mistake my pre-workout powder for cocaine.

raining= shopping. basic math

It’s only right to go shopping on rainy days. Both online and at the mall. Here’s what happened:

(That’s obviously not a picture of me. I easily weigh 60 lbs heavier, and my nail polish is a deeper red)

Benefit Cosmetics The Pretty Committee makeup set

The best makeup company EVER. Can’t say it enough.

This button:

..because it made me laugh at loud in the store. What I’ll do with a button, I have no idea. Probably put it on my gym bag. Or wear it on my shirt everyday.

Canvas flats:

Super comfy. AND I got these for $40 off the original price. (In my opinion, I wouldn’t even pay $40 dollars for these, so no wonder they had a bunch in inventory that needed to go on sale. Jen for the win)

CLICK espresso protein powder:

THIS IS MY FAVORITE PROTEIN POWDER OF ALL TIME. I love drinking it, baking with it, and adding it to my oats. I only ordered it now because it only ships in the US so I am having it sent to my parents house. CAN’T WAIT!!!!!

Another thing I’m having shipped to my parents:

(Also, not me. Sigh. I got black bottoms and a white top)

The rest of the stuff I got were gifts, so I can’t post them here. It’ll spoil the surprise.

Anybody have some good purchases recently? Let’s hear it!

BLENDER BROWNIES

Ok, I think the title of this post gives it away. It’s about brownies, people. But these aren’t just ordinary brownies.

These are blender brownies.

Balls, are they good. And healthy. I refrained from mentioning the healthy bit to Tyler until he consumed a couple. I didn’t want the thought of ‘healthy’ consuming his mind and altering his opinion of their taste. BECAUSE.THESE.ARE.GOOD.

Ingredients

  • 1 can chickpeas (14 oz, drained)
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tbsp apple sauce
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/8 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • Optional: 1/4 chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease 8×8 pan.
  3. Put all ingredients in the blender.
  4. Blend till smooth.
  5. Pour batter in pan.
  6. Optional: drop chocolate chips over top of poured batter
  7. Bake for 35 minutes.

Ack, it couldn’t get any easier than that. EXCEPT- it’s a bit more dangerous ‘licking the bowl.’ I wouldn’t do that.

I actually first attempted to use my brand new food processor for this, but one of the latches was defective. I of course had to make a call to the nice man and have him send me a warranty part. Frighteningly enough, that made my day. Getting a new (free) part for my kitchen appliance. Sigh. I am really a grown up now. Next thing you know, we’ll be vacuum shopping or some crap like that.

Oh, and I prepared, transfered from processor to back up blender, and baked this IN WHITE SHORTS.

Baller right here. This is my makeshift outfit shot- we don’t have any full length mirrors. Yet. (Like the new bathroom color??!!)

Today’s workout: TRX bootcamp

Today’s eats: Cheerios w/almond milk, grapefruit, veggie burger patty (no bun), pulled pork quesadilla (haven’t had it yet!)

Today’s “I bet you don’t care but I’m gonna tell you anyways”:

  • I don’t care what people day, wedding planning is easy.
  • I  love my new dentist (no cavities!)
  • I have been unemployed for 173 days.
  • I get to see MY FRIENNNNDSSSSSS in 18 days!!!!!
