Well, I am sore. This week has had a whole bunch of new workouts and boy am I feeling it today. I was messaging Athena last weekend about how I felt in a rut with my workouts, since none of them were leaving me sore the next day. I was even trying new exercises, varying sets, progressions, you name it. Nothing was working. Then I started my 30-day unlimited Hot Yoga pass last Friday and I somehow got back on the wagon with some crazy workouts. And I have woken up blissfully sore every morning since. Yeah yeah yeah, I know about recovery and all that, but I have also been mindful of targeting different muscle groups and what not so it’s a different sore each day.

The last workout I posted was the upper body pyramid workout. I admitted that I didn’t feel anything afterwards. Apparently I forgot about DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), because I ate my words the next day! My chest and triceps were aching. Then on Tuesday, I did the same pyramid format but with upper body exercises:

Yesterday I tried yet another new workout! My friend Christie invited me to the martial arts studio, 5 Elements Martial Arts, where she works (her sister owns the studio) to take a Fitness Kickboxing class. I have only taken (and taught) cardio kickboxing before, so I was excited to give it a try! Christie lended me the equipment- hand wraps, gloves and shin pads. Her sister taught the class and did a mixture of combinations with the bag and floor work. It was definitely a much different kickboxing workout when you are actually punching a bag than punching air! I really loved the class and hope to go more, but it is on the other side of town (I know, lame excuse, but it takes forever to get there!). Perhaps in addition to the anchor I want Tyler to install for my TRX (instead of using the door) he can also put one in for a punching bag? Just a thought. I mean, it did help me get out a lot of stress and anger 😉

Combined with all these workouts, I have also been going to a Hot Yoga class every day. I have already noticed a lot of improvement, and am always excited for the next class. I think my recent leap of faith to try yoga led me to be less nervous with trying the kickboxing class– although it really helped to know someone there. I made it my goal to try at least one new-to-me workout during the month of June and I already have that accomplished! I am looking to try other new things, so if you have suggestions (like, where is the best Barre studio in Calgary. What about pilates?!)

On to fitness-y things from these here internet box:

I am convinced that if my friends Athena and Ashley and I were friends and boys in the 80’s, we would look like this

Also, Athena- I think you need to teach #7 from this video:

I SERIOUSLY CANNOT STOP LAUGHING AT THIS ONE. I REALLY WISH I WAS AROUND TO TAKE THIS IN A GROUP EX CLASS. HAHAHAHAHAHAH

Ok, now I’m really excited to workout today!

Well, it’s 4pm and I am exhausted. Just

Well, it’s 4pm and I am exhausted. Just kidding, I have about 6 more hours left in me.

I got up pretty early this AM to down a protein shake and let it digest before heading off to hot yoga. I definitely wasn’t hydrated enough because I had to lay down on three occasions. There were 38 people in the class (pretty tight) and I was conveniently located between two men. SO. Either: a.) I reeked of stank, or b.) those men did. because DAYYY-UM
dayum

Anyways, I pushed myself pretty hard and held some postures a lot longer than I thought my energy levels would let me, so I’m pretty pleased with myself for today’s practice. Still have to head over to the gym for some lower body work and cardio.

Oh hey, SIDENOTE: In case you were wondering what my prep might be for the wedding, I am only following TWO rules (since I don’t believe in deprivation or extreme, crazy diet and exercise regimes)

  1. Only have alcohol 1x a week
  2. Don’t eat past 7pm

Not too hard to follow, but I definitely think it will contribute to my overall mental and physical health & wellness…especially with yoga which is a HUGE factor in my mental health!

I also headed down to the mall today and FINALLY found a dress for the wedding rehearsal.
jesus

I just really needed to find something that was light and airy since we will be on the east coast *HELLO HUMIDITY* and for some reason, all the dresses I had come across so far were lined with so much fabric, I would have been better off with a wet towel. Or they were too short. Or they were made for people who don’t have a figure.

Also, I’d like to point out that I spend approximately 1/2 my time acknowledging EVERY associate at EVERY store. I am one of those shoppers who doesn’t want to tell you hello and doesn’t want to tell you if there’s something in particular that I’m looking for. Just let me look!!

Then, since it is the first nice day in like forever, I took the puppies to the park. Now, on top of the house smelling like pee (when it rains, Reggie pees and poos by the front door), it also smells like wet muddy dog.

Now onto those recipes I promised.

Spinach Protein Pancakes

IMG_3995

Yeah, they are REALLY good.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 banana
  • 1-2 handfuls raw spinach
  • 1 scoop protein powder (I used chocolate because I love the flavor combination with the spinach)
  • 1 cup almond flour

Here’s what you’ll do:

1. Blend the egg whites, banana, spinach and protein powder until smooth.

2. Pour mixture in a bowl, and add the almond flour. Mix until fully incorporated.

3. Pour batter (should make 8 small-medium sized pancakes) on hot, greased griddle. Flip when bubbles rise to the top of the batter.

4. Top with honey (like I did) or whatever you want.

These suckers kept me full for HOURS and I didn’t feel guilty since they were all good ingredients! No, I did not eat all 8.

******

Then, there’s the pumpkin chocolate-chip pancakes. These are my weekend pancakes because um….well, they just are.

6.4 pancakes

Pumpkin Chocolate-Chip Pancakes

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1/2 c whole wheat flour
  • 1 t baking powder
  • dash salt
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 t pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/4 c canned pumpkin
  • 1/2 T brown sugar
  • 1/2 c unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 tsp veg oil
  • 1/2 t vanilla
  • desired amount of chocolate chips

Here’s what you’ll do:

1. Mix all the wet ingredients in one bowl.

2. Mix all the dry ingredients in another bowl.

3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet, and mix until fully combined.

4. Pour onto large, greased hot griddle (I use this to make 4 large pancakes). Sprinkle tops with chocolate chips. Once the cakes start to fluff and bubble, flip.

And because I had a HUGH JASS can of pumpkin, I then made Pumpkin Bread. Of course, I can’t just eat plain old pumpkin bread, so I sliced it while it was still warm, topped it with chocolate protein frosting (chocolate protein powder and almond milk stirred to desired consistency) and warmed fresh cherries. Seriously good flavor combination (because my computer is now in ‘Canada’ mode, it always puts a red squiggly line under flavor and neighbor and center and a whole bunch of other words. Canadians, please don’t feel the need to correct me just because I now reside in your country..I am used to spelling them this way, so that’s how I type!)

  • 1/2 t cinnamon
  • dash salt
  • 2 T unsweetened apple sauce
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 1/2 t vanilla

Here’s what you’ll do:

1. preheat oven to 350. spray loaf pan (9×5)

2. In a medium bowl, combine all the dry ingredients.

3. In a large bowl, mix the wet ingredients with a hand beater.

4. Add the dry mix to the wet mix and blend at a low speed until fully incorporated. Pour batter in loaf pan and bake for 50 minutes. Allow to cool in pan before removing.

Gotta go, the puppies are yelling at me for dinner.

Monday Moves: 6/3

It’s me again. I have been trying to upload the pics I had Tyler take for my Monday Moves (they were all upper body exercises and they were GOOD!) but for some reason, my camera decided to take its sweet time loading them to my computer- and then my camera died. Being the good blogger that I am (HA!) I wanted to have something for you guys for Monday Moves, so I decided to post the upper body workout I completed tonight at the gym.

Image

This is a pyramid workout, so you complete one rep of each move, then two reps of each move, then 3 of each…all the way up to 10 reps of each move. Once you hit 10, work your way back down the pyramid and complete 9 reps of each move, then 8 reps of each…all the way back down to one rep of each. By the time you complete the entire pyramid, you will have done 100 reps of each exercise! Not bad, huh?

Image

I’m probably going to eat my words tomorrow, but I am surprisingly not too sore from this one. I even did yoga earlier today AND used heavier weights for this! I’m thinking after a couple hours of rest, I’m going to have some sore shoulders at least..we shall see!

Hope this is something you guys will like…but please, let me know! I can do other Monday Moves posts that incorporate workouts or exercises you want to see!

Winesday Wednesday: 5/29

Hey there. Time for the weekly Winesday Wednesday roundup. And BOOOYYYYYYY do I need me some wine today. There are just so many life-stressers as of late that I just can’t cope without the alcohol-y goodness (although I think I will be significantly cutting back throughout June so I can fit into the wedding dress).

And if you’ve NEVER seen the following YouTube video, then you live in a hole. It’s hilarious times infinity.

Ok, I hope I have brought you a couple laughs so far. Onto what a few people sent me over the last week:

Keith (http://keithsodyssey.blogspot.ca/) sent a pic of another one of his wines- with a really neat description!- and the bottle stopper, too! Unfortunately, we don’t own a bottle stopper in our house because no bottle is EVER left unfinished. Ha! Keith’s description reads as follows:

Even in our house we don’t go through a whole bottle for just the two of us in one night. At least not every time. That means there has to be some kind of a stopper. This one is my favourite. This is a nice white, though it’s odd to use that word for a wine with such a deep amber color. There’s a bit of pear and apricot, with an almost mead like depth to it, though it’s not sweet. Just a nice rich soft fruity wine taste. It actually tastes better at room temperature than cool, unlike most whites.

5.29 WW6

Sara (http://www.mylifeoutofalabcoat.com/) tweeted me a pic of this neat drink saying “This is a ramos gin fizz..it’s good for you cause it’s made with egg whites” LOVE fizzes (My favorite one ever was had at Eastern Standard in Kenmore Square in Boston)

5.29 WW3

Monique (http://burpeestobubbly.com/) had a pretty stellar Memorial Day weekend. They had a Cocktail Station AND at one point, she had a Pineapple Mango Sage infused Margarita WITH DRY ICE! How crazy cool is that?

5.29 WW1

5.29 WW2

My friend, Ashley had some well deserved wine after a day of work on her beach house (was damaged from Hurricane Sandy). I saw some of the pictures she posted on her personal facebook page of the work they are doing on the house, and I definitely agree that the wine was WELL deserved!

5.29 WW4

Before I started typing this post, I texted my mom and told her to take a pic of the beer and wings that I knew she and my dad were out having. And of course, by the time she saw the text, she was already home, so instead she took two random beers out of the fridge and took a pic. Although, she did mention she had TWO beers at the bar (and 12 1/2 wings…although, how do you just eat 1.2 a wing? Aren’t they tiny enough?)

5.29 WW8

Tyler and I tried some new-to-us beers this past weekend, and they were all pretty good! Although, I am REALLY in the mood for some Sam Summer…soon I can indulge when we go back to NY!!

5.29 WW7

We also went to a BBQ this past weekend and played around with way too many different drink concoctions with the Margaritaville machine. It was AWESOME.

What’s your favorite summer drink?
