Getting the ball rolling

Well, last night ended terribly. I committed a crime, a very bad crime. I weighed myself at the end of the day- at the end of a holiday weekend. The verdict? You don’t want to know. Ugh, I was so mad at myself. Hated myself even.

You’d think after 25 years I’d have learned to enjoy food and fitness in balance. But every once in a while- it takes a mean turn and I cry myself to sleep over a stupid number on a stupid scale.

After a huge sobfest and a good nights sleep, I started today with a clean slate. Breakfast was a bowl of oats w/honey, almond milk, almond butter, raisins and toasted coconut.

Today’s workout included a 3 mile run- the first ever since moving to 3500 ft altitude. I think I did pretty good

Sub-10 min miles. I’ll take it, thankya. And the route I took was hilly. Another high five for me.

I listened to a new playlist for my run- it’s a weird mix of genres and old/new stuff, but it hit the spot for a run today!

Oh, and Nicki Minaj’s new CD? Fantastic. She does a lot of the rap that she’s known for, but here and there she actually sings and she has a great voice. And great lyrics. And great featuring artists. Most of the songs talk about b*tches and d*ck, though. Hell, one song’s even titled Come on A Cone. For serious. But I really like the music- I’ll just have to watch my potty mouth for a bit 😉

My heart was a-thumpin’ by the time I got home. Theeeen, I did a quick at home circuit that consisted of

    Squats with alternating front kicks
    Side lunges with high knee
    Pushups
    Crunches
    Side plank dips
    Mountain climbers
    Jumping jacks
    Side crunches
    Jump rope

Oof!

15 minutes of those moves, and I broke my second sweat of the day. Very pleased with my workout on day 1 of post-scale horror.

Lunch was a smoothie with an interesting list of ingredients.

20120409-183056.jpg
It included: 1 frozen banana, 2 handfuls spinach, orange juice, frozen raspberries, Oikos Greek yogurt, and 2 medjool dates. Totally delicious.

Dinner was quickly and easy- another round of healthy chicken tenders with broccoli and spinach citrus couscous.

Dessert was an orange.

I finally got around to trying out another way to get hard cooked eggs. Rather than boiling them, I baked them!

20120409-183842.jpg
In the oven they went at 325 for 30 minutes, then I plunged them in ice water to stop them from cooking. They actually turned out! I’ll be eating them over the next few days! Yum.

A little bit of this, A little bit of that

18-20: I used to hope and pray I wouldn’t get carded so that I could go out with my friends

21: I loved loved LOVED getting carded so that I could be all “hella yeahhhhh bitttchhhesss I’m legal nowwwwwww! SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS! SHOTS! EVRRRRRAYYYYBOOOODY!

22-24: Get carded here and there. No big thang.

25: CARD ME PLEASE, OR DO YOU REALLY THINK I LOOK THAT OLD?!!!!!

25 and in Canada: Bitch please, they don’t ever card here. Drinking age is like 2.

I grew up in the wrong country.

Took Layla for TWO (not one, but TWO) walks today. It was snowin’ and blowin’ out there today. Walk numero uno was cut short because I literally could not hold the poop bag anymore. The wind had its way….

Walk numero dos was much more successful. No doo-doo.

And of course, gurllll did her roly poly in the fresh powder..

It’s a good thing most of her roly poly moments are during the day time while everyone is at work, otherwise neighbors would gather at their windows and watch the madness. One dude did stop his car and she was a nut. Like mother, like daughter. It was a proud moment for me.

"What's that you say?!"

"Oh no, you di'int!"

Enough with the dog pictures, Jen! Alright, alright….for today.

Lesson #472 about Twitter: Ask (yourself) and you shall receive.

An hour later, and this delovely (delicious AND lovely) smoothie was to be had:

  • banana
  • raspberries
  • cranberries
  • pineapple
  • oj

Hit the spot.

(‘the spot’ being the smoothie section of my brain/belly)

This next thing I have asked for, and have yet to receive: Girl Scout Thin Mints. I just want one box people. 2 measly sleeves of those minty rounds of love. Put ’em in the freezer and break out a few every now and then to go with ice cream.

Here’s what I have done to obtain aforementioned cookies:

1)Facebook plea

2) Twitter war cry

3) General around-the-house humming and hawwing until cookies magically appear.

4) I have done my due diligence and Googled where the Girl Guides of Canada are selling their vanilla/chocolate cookies and I will ask them when I can expect thin mints to be on the menu.

I am running out of hope options.

Another story for you: I was a Daisy, a Brownie, a Junior, AND a Cadet. Cookie season was the Olympics. Except bloodier. Thank god my dad worked in San Francisco and had major hookups with lots of coworkers. He I sold the sh*t outta those cookies. I feel a little bit bad now that I think about it because he had to bring all those cookies on Bart on a dolly into the city. And really, what did that get me? A badge (‘we don’t need no stinking badges!’) a stuffed animal, and maybe a coin purse.

*Blah, blah, blah, it taught you hard work and perseverance pay off. Blood, sweat, tears and your father’s co-workers get you a coin purse. Sigh.

What’s your favorite Girl Scout cookie?

Where you a Girl Scout?

Let’s get back to my Humpday, shall we? I was itching to do something today, so what’s free and easy? A walk! It looked nice out, and boy was I right!

Hey, Napoleon, how much you wanna make a bet I can throw a football over them mountains?!

Speaking of Napoleon Dynamite, I’mma tell you a story. Picture it: Freshman year at college. Making friends. Drinking CHEAP beer. Being silly, Studying (that one’s for you, mom and dad), and what not. So on a random trip to Wal-Mart- the mecca of keeping college students entertained- I decide to buy a hamster and name him Napoleon. BUT, it had to be pronounced ‘Na-po-leoooo(silent n)’ If I knew how to add a sound bit of the correct pronunciation, I would. I bought him a pink wheel and a pink castle and snuck him into my dorm. (The dorm nicknamed The Virgin Vault because of strict security to not allow any boys to come in and visit us awesome froshie gals). Anyhoo, Napoleon lived the life at college. I often let him roam the halls in his little ball and I would often get instant messages from other girls in the dorm saying they saw him roll by. Often, it would be girls on other floors. He was a magical hamster that could handle the stairs.

Weird tangent, but now you know. Sadly, Napoleon’s life was cut short when I left him in his cage at home while I went on vacation to Florida that following summer. When I came back, I realized he ran out of food, so I fed him Craisins. Turns out, Craisins are poison to those little fellas. RIP Napoleon: 2004-2005.

*Cough, cough* So, today’s walk. Beautious. Like, not a cloud in the sky. Layla was happy as a clam. So was I. Minus the wind. And wind burn I discovered upon return. Minor deets.

Yeah, I take a lot of pictures of my dog. You would too, if you were (dare I bring it up again) unemployed. At least I’m giving her all the atteny-ten-ten-tion she deserves! I always justify her spoiledness by reminding people of the fact she was a rescue pup and was shot in the face and is missing a bit of her left ear and is deathly afraid of garbage bags. With that, she can have all the walks she wants.

Now here’s where I will display the extent of my artistic photography:

No clouds, bright blue sky, and a glimpse of tree branch on the bottom left. Boom, done. (*Note: I did take the lovely picture you see on the header of this blog!)

Lunch today was going to be the Creamy peanut butter chocolate avocado smoothie I saw on get healthy with heather, but I swapped the avocado for spinach when I found that my avocado should have been tossed about a week ago. whoops. Here’s my modified recipe I took from her blog:

  • 2 handfuls baby spinach
  • banana
  • 1 c. almond milk
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ice

I am slurpin’ this sucker down now! Yum!

Any favorite/interesting smoothies out there? I’m all ears!!
