Weekend Recap

The good thing about this Monday is that it’s another Monday closer to getting this baby out! Woop. Anyways,  I had a hard time remembering what the hell I’ve been up to the last few days, but here’s what I’ve come up with: Thursday: I ran a ton of errands. Boring. Had my weekly doctor appointment, went to Ikea for some frames, got my rings cleaned, picked up some goodies at the farmer’s market, then paint at Home Depot. Not surprisingly these days, it left me completely exhausted so I’m thinking there were about a half dozen naps taken that day. Same goes for Reggie. photo-44 Friday: I did something in the morning, but can’t remember what. Then decided to go to the mall to get my cardio in by walking around and managed to get some great steals at Target before it closes. I also swung by starbucks and treated myself to a frappuccino (something I haven’t had in about 13 years!) It was really good, especially enjoyed on the sunny patio with the pups. photo 1-41 Tyler put some movie posters in the Ikea frames I bought. These- and NFL memorabilia- are the decor in our basement/movie room. Oh, and Tyler made chicken parm for dinner and it was SOOO GOOD and I LOVE IT and I LOVE HIM FOR MAKING IT. yummmm. photo 2-40 Saturday: I woke up early and whipped up a carrot cake smoothie (recipe can be found here. I modified a bit based on what I had available) It was seriously good and tasted just like carrot cake. And….it was healthy! It’s a great solution when you’re craving a slice of actual carrot cake, but don’t have the time or desire to bake. photo 3-33 We then had our last childbirth class and this session focused on infant care. And yes, I’m still convinced I’m going to break this baby and freak out when he cries and not know how to properly swaddle and basically ruin his life. Ugh. Tyler had woken up sick, so I felt slightly guilty for sending him to the store mid-class to get me beef jerky and a protein bar. But I’m growing a human so I win. After class, we put a serious dent in our wallets at Costco then came home to gobble up some pizza from a new-to-us local place…that turned out to be not so great. HEY- you eat whatever’s in front of you when you’re hangry. layoff Sunday: Holy moly were we busy. Tyler did SO much around the house- lots of painting and mudding and cleaning and more cleaning and more cleaning. I managed to get all the laundry done, organize more stuff in the baby’s room, and pick up most all of the last items we need for said baby. PS: Walmart is a clusterfuck on Sundays. PPS: There’s a Dairy Queen near our house that has a drive-thru. How did I not know this? photo 4-22 The dogs lucked out for two reasons: 1) The weather was sunny and DRY, and 2) I was feeling good, so I took them to the park. They loved it. You know how I could tell they loved it? They crapped 4 times and slept like dead animals for the rest of the evening. dogs So that’s our weekend in a nutshell. Honorable mentions:

  • I am working out again! Still super modified, but my back has finally started to feel better and I can actually move! (Hips are now sore 24/7 and lots of ligament pain on my right side, but WAY more manageable. I have all my napping and chillin’ out maxin, just relaxin’ all cool to thank for that) Edited to add: I am still on short term disability, and I have that to thank for my improved condition. I have been able to get out of the house for errands, but that doesn’t come without discomfort and a lot of shifting/stopping/resting to accommodate my situation. I just don’t want anyone thinking I’m trying to take advantage of the time off!
  • I finished season 3 of Scandal and will now be forcing Tyler to download season 4 because  I need to be as current as possible. We started to watch Bloodline on Saturday, but I don’t think it’s going to be a hit with Tyler. I might watch it though since I have so much freaking time on my hands.
  • We ordered our pizza on Saturday via Skip The Dishes. It was our first time using the service, and it was pretty good to get GPS updates on where our driver was with our food!

Ok, I think it’s time for a nap now. How was your weekend?

Weekend Recap

Not gonna lie, I’m like super uncomfortable. To the point of tears. While the time off from work has been great and I’ve been able to attempt relaxing, it’s still a struggle to find even a stretch of 20 minutes (sleep included!) where my back, my legs or my ribcage isn’t in rip-roaring pain.

I’m not complaining though, it’s only temporary pain! And heck, it could be WAY worse.

I have a pretty good support buddy, too.

photo 1-38

Yeah, sure Tyler is here too and he’s been great. But it’s more fun to snuggle with Layla. Especially since she gets up early with me and now follows me around like a shadow.

Ok, so onto the recap. It’s not very exciting.

Friday, I had my doctor’s appt. They did that swab thingy and used an ultrasound to check the baby was head down. He is! Thank goodness. Now my appointments will be weekly until he comes OUT. That night, we had pizza for dins and watched Unbroken and several episodes of Inside Man.

Saturday we had our third childbirth class. This week there were several flashcards involved (hello 3rd grade!) and we discussed breastfeeding. Pretty sure I’m still totally grossed out by it, but it’s cheaper than formula. And God knows we could used the savings.

photo 2-38

After the class, we went across the street to the hospital and checked out the labor and delivery floor just to get a lay of the land. It was so quiet! Which was weird, because the nurse at the check-in desk kept *quietly* running around exclaiming how busy she was! I also had a mini-anxiety attack because I don’t like hospitals. I’ve actually never been admitted to one before, so immmmmmm yeah.

We rounded off the afternoon with a trip to Home Depot. Surprise surprise! We picked up some paint and blinds for our kitchen windows (thank GOD for those blinds). I started to feel like shit, so I parked it on the couch while Tyler got to painting..supervised by Reggie…then made us dinner.

We watched Interstellar then another few episodes of Inside Man. The movie was just alright- we agreed it was like Signs meets Contact. Meh.

Sunday, I got up early and made pancakes for myself. I keep forgetting to buy maple syrup, so I had to improvise with cinnamon raisin pancakes topped with a honey yogurt drizzle. Sounds great, tasted great, looks like shit, and now I want to gag just thinking about it. I want to chug maple syrup instead.

photo-40

I managed to do the laundry and Tyler managed to do just about EVERYTHING else around the house. He’s so good. I should buy him a present.

Nevermind, I’m making him a human.

We had hot dogs for dinner and I managed to NOT buy anything online, even though it was really the only thing I had the energy for. Is it just me, or does anyone else get online-shopping-happy then quit before checkout once you see how much shipping costs? I was going to order a bunch of stuff I needed from Rocky Mountain Soap, but then saw that shipping was $7 so I’ve decided to just task Tyler with the errand of going to their downtown location on his lunch break. Husbands are cheaper than Canada Post.

Ahaha, I just remembered that the woman teaching our childbirth class used a shark hand puppet and a stuffed boob to demonstrate breastfeeding. Just picture it. Maybe you’ll laugh too?

How was your weekend??

Weekend Recap

Friday- all I really did was take naps. Since I could barely move, I figured that sounded like a pretty good itinerary. I mean, I’ve earned it?

nap

Damn right I worked hard. I pride myself on being super fast and efficient in my tasks and feel slightly bummed that I had to abruptly hand over my duties to my not-yet-ready replacement. Can’t worry about that now!!

Saturday- I got up at the crack of dawn and baked banana bread (using this recipe). Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out as well as my last loaf, but it’s nothing that a good slather of pb/nutella/butter can’t fix!

photo-35

Tyler and I then had our second childbirth class at the hospital. There’s a ton of good info, but I HATE hospitals, so I just get a bit of anxiety thinking about being hooked up to a bunch of crap and well…just being in the hospital in general. I’m hoping that everything is smooth sailing so we can get in and out of there as quickly as possible.

Best part of the class: the instructor is HILARIOUS. She’s a retired OB from Argentina who is not afraid to make the men in class feel as awkward as possible. And I love it.

We finished off the day with a great steak dinner at home and watched Exodus in 3D with our snazzy glasses. It was trippy being able to watch a 3D movie at home on such a large screen. The movie was good but not too thrilling since my Catholic education pretty much gave away the ending. (that’s supposed to be funny.)

photo-36

Sunday: I met my friend Susie for brunch at Nellie’s in Kensington (decided to get out of the house for a bit before the pain really kicked in for the day). All I really wanted was the bacon. But I managed to eat the eggs and fruit too. Hashtag healthy.

photo-37

And I sold my very first thing on Kijiji! What a sad accomplishment. But in all honesty, I never really had anything worth selling since I moved to Calgary with none of my things except for a potion of my clothes. But, I managed to sell my monthly transit pass pretty quickly (hey, it’s $99/mo and I only used it for a couple days!)

The rest of the day was filled with laundry and laying around the house…while Tyler did a ton of household chores AND installed the car seat!

Here’s to hoping the coming week is slightly more exciting (doubtful!)

How was your weekend? Best thing you did?

Fun things

I wish I had more fun things to post.

Like new beers I’ve tried.
Or bars I’ve gone to.

Sad face.

I need this shirt.

BUT, life goes on and there are some other fun things going on that aren’t alcohol related (how many people are shaking their head right now?)

For instance:
-Tyler and I have successfully watched 350923752309 movies on our new projector screen. It’s super awesome. The dogs love it down in our ‘new’ basement too. No pics yet as half of it is still not finished (Tyler ripped out the kitchen that was down there and we are currently in the process of deciding the design for what will take it’s place)

(Repeat photo from last post)
-I checked out Corbeaux Bakehouse with Susie last weekend. I’ve noticed a lot of hype for the new place all over social media and had to give it a shot. Bad news: there was a 2 hour wait when we got there. I was super tempted to pull the ‘but I’m pregnant and hungry’ card, but I forgot. Instead, we bought some goodies from their counter and if I have to be honest- they weren’t anything special. I’d prefer something made at home any day.

-I got my hair done a couple of weeks ago (made sure to squeeze in one last appt with my stylist before she went on mat leave) and I actually had her cut my hair. Sure, the length doesn’t look any different but HOLY CRAP did it make a world of difference in how my hair washes/dries/styles. I am a happy lady. But sad that I won’t have her do my hair for a while.

IMG_3224
-I booked my maternity/newborn photo sessions! (after 2 full days of dying over the cost of them, I finally just pulled the trigger) To my childless friends: I hear ya, this is so barfy to read. I’m guessing the hormones have got me unusually giddy.
-I made no bake cookies that had no butter, no sugar and only a quater of the pb the normal recipe calls for. And guess what? They were good! Still not the real deal, but Tyler ate a few so I know they are somewhat decent.

IMG_3329
-I DO NOT want to talk about the Super Bowl. Sad. Very sad.
-But I will talk about Super Bowl food! It was just Tyler and I (and two eager pups) so I didn’t want to make too much, but decided on wings, pulled chicken sliders and potato skins. The potato skins were my fave- next time I am totally putting more cheese on those suckers! PS: I may have also made a chocolate pie which I consumed ALL BY MYSELF…in 2 days.

IMG_3298
-Is it OK for me to say that some of my home workouts have actually been fun? I did a 1000 rep workout on Saturday night and just LOVED it. About 700 of the reps were squat related so that was even more fun about 48 hours later. I’ve also been able to hang around with the pups and Tyler while getting my workouts done which you’d THINK would be distracting, but it’s been some weird sort of motivation for me since I can’t participate in some of the advanced moves. Call it TOGETHERNESS if you will. (I did a tabata workout last night while Tyler played video games and the pups slept next to us. Cue the cheezy awwwww cute family noises. But seriously, I loved it)

-Shows I’m currently watching on the weekly: Downton Abbey, The Bachelor (barf), Kate plus 8 (double barf), My Big Fat Fabulous Life, Gold Rush, Moonshiners, Mindy Project, Blacklist, RHOBH. I’m missing a couple, but you can see I don’t discriminate on the variety.
-Not that I’m counting or anything, BUT I only have 37 more days of work before I get a WHOLE YEAR of mat leave!! (for my US friends: and I still get $$!) Man, I love Canada.
-Speaking of loving Canada, I also just found out that I’m almost eligible to apply for citizenship here. Downside of that: I also just found out it’s taking about 24 months for the government to process those applications. Upside of that: Once I obtain citizenship, we may consider a move back to the states! (Obviously that is in the way distant future. And it’s only a consideration) HELLO: I need my child to understand that he is half American. If he grows up thinking it’s ok to spell ‘favorite’ as ‘favourite’ and refer to his hat as a toque, well then I just might die. No offense.

IMG_3330
(I love it here, just not the snow. Or the $$$ to fly just to see family/friends!)
-We lucked out at Home Depot last weekend and found a can of paint on the ‘oops’ shelf (you know, when people buy paint then realize it’s not the color they want, so Home Depot takes it back and tried to resell it for way cheap?) WELL it was a gallon of Behr Marquee paint in a really pretty bluish color and we got it for $9 instead of the regular $60ish! Yay project for me to do when I have time off in a couple weeks. PS: Tyler and I now swear by this paint, so if you are in the market for a paint recommendation Behr Marquee is the way to go- it really does only take one coat to cover ANY existing color!

Any fun things you want to share? I need to add more than a Home Depot purchase and a pastry to my list. For reals.
