Playing Catch Up

Hey friends, happy Thursday! Thought I’d check in and catch you up on what we’ve been up to lately. To be honest, I have been super busy + Wes has been super cranky + I sorta lost my writing mojo. I really need to not let social media get to me…I get stuck comparing myself to others and when I don’t think my presence (i.e.: this blog) isn’t as great as others, then I get super let down.

Ok ok, let’s not be all negative nancy here. So here’s what we’ve been doing…

Friday: pancakes. because…..FRIDAY.IMG_5553

IMG_5585

I finally got the finishing touches done on some bibdanas my mom made and had Wes try one on for size. Perfect! PS: We are open for hire if anyone wants to buy any ūüėČ

An unexpectedly long nap means mama makes congo bars. So delicious. Also, so deadly on the hips.

Afternoon bathies!

Pre “work” dinner and snuggles with my I SCREAM baby.

I judged a Specialty category at Beerfest (more on that next Wednesday!)

Saturday: Morning park time with Wes

IMG_5615

IMG_5629

IMG_5640

I WORKED the Brewster’s tent at Beerfest. It was a long shift (2-10pm), but we were given breaks to wander around the different halls to check out some of the other beer and food that was offered.

IMG_5650

Sunday:¬†I didn’t really get a Mother’s Day (at first, I was A-OK with it, but towards the end of the day, I was super sad about it, especially after seeing all the mother’s day crap on Facebook…eek) but in a sense, I was ‘gifted’ some me-time which came in the form of going on the Calgary Brewery Tours Spirit of Alberta Tour (Again, more on this next Wednesday)

IMG_5658

I was gone from about 10:30-7pm and came home to whip up a super quick dinner.

IMG_5688

Monday/Tuesday:¬†These days don’t really count. I was a terrible combination of sad, mad, tired, you name it. Not much happened besides some walks, workouts, and baking cookies.

IMG_5706

IMG_5710

These are a few of my favorite things. Shakeology is a great restart for me especially after a long weekend that includes alcohol, and these chocolate chip cookies just plain ol’ make me happy as a pig in mud.

I worked Tuesday night and made a decent amount of money, so that’s a great way to end the day I suppose!

Wednesday:¬†I now gotta have pancakes 2x a week because they’re so dang good. It’s a crying shame that Wes has taken a liking to them too, because he steals at least two off my plate each time.

IMG_5713

IMG_5740

^Some diaper bag favorites: Bubbles & Balms Butt Butter; Pure Haven Essentials Boo Boo Stick¬†<–this is the link to my friend’s consultant site. She is a rep for the company (which is currently only operating in the US, so US friends please check it out!);¬†Love Child Organics Oaty Chomps

This kid has been rip-roaring through everything in his room lately. It’s like he’s a tornado and destroys everything in his path! Last week, he had a penchant for throwing all the diapers and now he’s into dumping ¬†my diaper bag.

IMG_5739

IMG_5744

I threw together a healthy chicken zucchini casserole and it was delicious. Of course mine didn’t turn out as pretty as the one from the recipe I used, but no flavor points were deducted.

IMG_5746

Tyler and I sipped the remainder of a bottle of mead I purchased from the tour I went on on Sunday. It wasn’t much haha

IMG_5749

Marinara sauce brings out the biggest of smiles from him. (Same goes with farts).

IMG_5757

So there you have it, folks!

Weekender {Baby, Fitness, Beer}

Well, it’s been a pretty unproductive weekend over here. I’m hoping with the upswing of better weather this week, we’ll have more on our agenda in the coming days!

Friday: We didn’t get out of the house until after lunch. It was really only to head to the mall and return some stuff…so nothing majorly fun. Womp. Wes was a grumpy mister- he really doesn’t like being in the stroller especially when it’s not moving at a constant, rapid pace.

IMG_5180

He fought against an afternoon nap, so he was going a bit stir crazy just about the time I had to leave for work. Pro: I didn’t have to deal with a grump baby for a couple of hours. Con: I left my mom to deal with it and felt a bit bad. Ha! Tyler is still chugging away at the multiple home projects (not jealous of that, either).

IMG_5164

IMG_5168

IMG_5170

IMG_5174

IMG_5177

We didn’t really plan out dinner, so I threw together a bacon grilled cheese sandwich before heading off to work.

IMG_5181

Work went pretty well, until I noticed at the end of my shift that I made a big mistake with some cash. It didn’t negatively impact my employment or anything, but I felt pretty crummy about it. Luckily, my boss also felt bad about the mixup and bought me a beer before I headed home.

IMG_5235

Saturday:¬†We had a pretty good morning- lots of floor time and snuggles. After breakfast, my mom, Wes and I headed to a used kid’s sale and scored quite a few clothing items for only $5. Only downer was that we were there while it was Wes’s nap time so he was a lovely mix of grumpy and sleepy. He ended up going down really easy once we got back and I was able to take the dogs for a nice long walk.

IMG_5182

IMG_5184

IMG_5193

IMG_5198

My mom was able to get some work done too. We have a makeshift sweatshop set up in the guest bedroom so my mom can sew sew sew.

IMG_5179

Before I left for work, I got some more snuggles.

IMG_5241

IMG_5219

IMG_5226

IMG_5234

My shift this time went a lot better. Thank goodness!

Sunday:¬†I slept like a rock the entire night (this is a rarity lately) and didn’t even hear Wes wake up. I finally opened my eyes at 8:30. Love good sleeps like that ūüôā

After Wes’s first nap and a patio picnic lunch, my mom and I walked to the grocery store for dinner stuff. Tyler has been replacing our flooring, so the main living area has been a disaster zone. We have been trying to keep Wes entertained either out of the house, or in alternate rooms- which is a bit tricky.

IMG_5243

During his afternoon nap, I was able to walk the dogs and enjoy some sun (AND CAKE) on the patio.

Then it was time to head to the swings!

IMG_5245

IMG_5260

IMG_5262

For dinner, we had chicken kebobs and pasta salad which Wes eagerly attempted to steal off my mom’s plate.

IMG_5268

IMG_5271

And that’s it! Weekends just fly by I tell ya.

Some other random stuff:

I’ve completed the first four weeks of 22 Minute Hard Corps and love the extra strength it’s given my core, arms and glutes. I’m excited for the remaining four weeks to see if I’ll continue to improve! (PS: If you’re interested in this program… message me for more info!)

IMG_5154

The Grapple Toy Tether giveaway is still open! There have only been a few entries, so PLEASE check it out and enter!!! I mean, c’mon who doesn’t love free stuff??

BEERFEST is next weekend! I am judging during the Friday session and working the Saturday session. This is pretty much my dream- not only do I get to taste beer and decide which are best, but I also get to hand out beer to fellow enthusiasts! Man, I’m really loving this whole not-going-back-to-my-desk-job thing.

CIBF_SOBEYSSAFEWAY_2015

And then to top off next weekend, I have been given the best Mother’s Day gift ever–> I’ll be going on the Spirit of Alberta Tasting Tour hosted by Calgary Brewery Tours. YAASSSS. I am beyond excited for this and can’t wait to fill you guys in with more info next week! ūüôā

So all this talk makes me think about how random my blogging topics are- I am obsessed with 1) my child 2) fitness, and 3) craft beer. I think¬†it’s a pretty healthy balance (plus, it’s my life so it’s not like I have to please everyone) but then it makes it a bit confusing to readers. Right? I’ve found that my instagram is pretty much all things Wes while my Twitter is beer beer beer. And then I snap (snapchat: nutcaseinpoint) fitness type photos if I remember to take any.

I just wanted to bring it up because I am guessing the variety has caused me to lose some readers? I thrive on the connections- plus, I spend a lot of time typing these things up(!!!) and I feel like I haven’t gotten any of that lately. This might sound selfish to ask, but I LOVE hearing from you guys! And I do my best to try to engage on others blogs as well. Keyword: try.

All this blabbing and I guess all I’m trying to say is I’d love for some feedback! Anything you have to say would be appreciated. Unless it’s nasty, then keep it to yourself ūüôā

Jibber Jabber

1. Friday afternoon, I took my lunch break a little late and headed over to Starbucks to enjoy a coffee, cookie and some phone time with my dad. We were about 20 minutes into our conversation, when all of a sudden the phone beeped and cut us off. I called him back and he said that my mom just pulled in the driveway (in his car) so his bluetooth kicked in and my mom didn’t know what the noise was, so she disconnected us. After he handed the phone to my mom when she came in, my dad then left (in his car) and AGAIN the blue tooth connected, ¬†and over me/my mom’s conversation, we could hear ‘Wrap it up ladies, I’m turning the car on and I’m leaving!”

photo 1

So basically, that was the funniest thing ever and not even remotely close to chuckle-worthy when retelling the story. Oh well.

2. I am now OBSESSED with Rise Kombucha. It is infinitely¬†better in taste than the other stuff…and it’s Canadian made! Cool beans. If you ever come across a bottle, TRY IT. Not only are the flavors yum yum¬†x100, but the¬†culture¬†schtuff¬†isn’t as disgusting to ingest like in other bottles. So far I’ve had: blueberry¬† maple, lemongrass, and mint chlorophyll (NOT borophyll. ahahahah I crack myself up. Adam Sandler reference used at its finest)

3. I watched a marathon of Courtney¬†Loves Dallas yesterday¬†afternoon. What did I learn? I learned that I should have used my Sunday afternoon doing just about anything else. I also realized how unfashionable I am and that I do not buy clothes at all anymore. I also learned that I don’t ever want botox, to be single again, or to constantly reference everything in relation to ‘my blog.’ (Seriously, does anyone watch this and hear how many times she talks about her blog?! I guess I can’t hate that much..she DID get her own TV show). Also, I now read her blog.

4. Anchorman 2: I LIVED off the first movie, DIED when I heard a sequel was going to be made, and have now made 2 attempts to watch at home and just can’t get into it. I hope I’m not losing my comedic appreciation. Must be all the Downton Abbey in my Netflix queue.

5. I met up with a friend after work on Friday and managed to be responsible enough to leave at a reasonable hour so that I could still take the train/bus home. I unknowingly timed it PERFECTLY, because my bus had just pulled up as soon as the train pulled into the station. I was so giddy I think I skipped the whole way over…only to see the bus driver had fallen asleep in his seat. So I knocked and knocked. And knocked. And he finally woke to open the door. No sooner did I get in a find my seat, there was another passenger¬†knocking on the door- and the driver has already fell back asleep! The good news is: he stayed alert the entire drive home. The bad news is: if I were to tweet this to Calgary Transit, I don’t think they’d give two hoots. Also, during said meet-up, I drank a Japanese beer.

6. MAJOR DILEMMA: Calgary Beerfest of Banff Food and Wine Fest? I shall give pros and cons to each and allow you to help me decide.

BEER FEST (May 3)

Calgary-beerfest-2014

(source)

Pros:

  • It’s beer.
  • And I love beer.
  • And I think I’ve tried every thing there is to offer in Calgary.
  • So this would help me find some other stuff I might like.
  • And it’ll be an easy commute just off the train.

Cons:

  • Admission is $19 plus the cost of tickets used to sample beers.
  • If I find a beer I like, chances are it won’t be something available regularly, which is kind of what I want.

Banff Wine and Food Fest (May 31)

Pros:

  • Wine AND food.
  • In Banff. In the FAIRMONT.
  • A lot of these wines may be available for immediate purchase and may be more accessible for future purchase.
  • It’s interesting to talk with smaller vineyards/producers since we may our own wine and can learn a lot!

Cons:

  • $24/ticket Plus tasting tickets.
  • Farther from home, so $$ for gas and the overnight trip.

ORRR WAIT: there’s a third option. Since these are both in May, I can just forego the events and celebrate Cinco de Mayo with my Margaritaville machine at home. Much more cost efficient AND I don’t have to put on a bra!

Honorable Mentions (meaning: things I want to tell you, but not in paragraph form)

  1. I have been eating a crap ton of avocados lately.
  2. Reggie pulled a muscle in his leg this weekend.
  3. We picked our appliances, flooring, and backsplash this weekend.
  4. I made my phone last ALL DAY on Saturday with only 28% battery power.
  5. I have Friday off this week and plan on having an uber ‘me’ day.

Do you have any honorable mentions from the weekend? (Feel free to write a whole paragraph if you want!)

I made balls…and other topics

As promised, here is the recipe from last night’s dinner (from Eights and Weights)

Healthy Turkey Meatballs

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground turkey
  • 1/4 c breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp soy milk (I used almond)
  • 1/2 tbsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 2 gloves garlic (I used minced garlic)
  • Grated veggies (I used carrots)
  • 1 pack of whole wheat spaghetti
  • 1 28 oz can tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves
  • 1 onion (I used 1/2)
  • Cooking spray
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degress and spray baking sheet with the cooking spray

2. In a large bowl, combine the turkey, breadcrumbs, parmesan, milk, egg, black pepper, thyme, 1/2 clove garlic, grated veggies, and half the salt

3. Once combined, form into balls (I did 12 medium sized)

4. Baked for about 15 minutes, until balls are browned.

5. For the sauce, heat the oil in a saucepan. Add in the onion and rest of the garlic. Right as it browns, add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, and the rest of the salt. (I threw in a little chili powder as well)

6. Let the sauce simmer. When the meatballs are done, carefully add them to the sauce and allow at least an additional 15 minutes of simmering before serving (I had them simmer about 45 minutes. The longer, the better)

7. Cook the spaghetti per the directions on the box. Top readied spaghetti with balls and sauce and dinner is served.

******

Ok now that we’re done with that, I’d like to give a shout out to Athena¬†for the workout she posted from her Tuesday night class (Oh how I miss Two a Day Tuesdays. Not only for the workouts, but for the peeeeeeople!)

I started with 10 minutes of HIIT on the spin bike, then got right to it.

There were 2 rounds of tabatas. Then cardio after each round. I chose to do a minute of cardio between each tabata for a little extra punch.

Round 1

  • On the bosu: Pushups/Burpees
  • With a medicine ball: Woodchops/Pulses
  • Bands: Bicep curls (In and out)

Round 2

  • On the bosu: Planks/Mountain Climbers
  • With a medicine ball: Front lunges w/twist
  • Bands: Tricep extensions

Then I did all the ab work she posted. (Seriously, just check out her post-linked above- for a more complete description).

Last, I hopped on the elliptical for another 10 minutes of HIIT.

It was a GREAT workout. I swallowed so much salty sweat. (Gross. Cringe. Barf. TMI- I know)

Only difference in my workout from Athena’s was the music selection. She chose to go with a Cinco de Mayo theme. Me: not so much. I have been hearing way too much techno-y/pop-y music lately, that I needed me some rap, hop-hop and otherwise ‘thuggy-thug’ music. (This is no offense to anyone by referring to it as ‘thuggy-thug.’ I just think it’s an amusing way to get the vibe across.) Little Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Kayne, Snoop and Notorious all made appearances on my playlist this am. I gotta tell ya, that music really revs my engine.

On the way to the gym I heard this song¬†and I got¬†really¬†amped to work out. It really just makes me wanna dance and twist and shake and shimmy. Please tell me that you clicked on the link. And that as soon as the music played, you started bobbing your head or rocking your shoulders back and forth. Admit it. Because that’s what I’m doing. RIGHT NOW. Of course I’m playing it on repeat until I finish this post.

Then, on the way back, I heard this song. It was my very first favorite song that¬†wasn’t¬†and oldie or a Disney tune. Total throwback. Not gonna lie, I have used it quite a few times in playlists for classes I ran in Boston. Best part was when someone in the class would be like “Aww man, great tune” They scored 50 points in my book.

Ok, on to address the notes I left for myself in the last post.

1) Lululemon Swimsuits.

(Source)

I’m pretty sure I am going to buy all of them. I went to the mall yesterday just to “visit” them and I fell in love. Tyler, are you reading? Your lady wants a swimsuit. The gal who freaked out at the Hot Springs 2 weeks ago because of the dreaded bathing suit wearing…WANTS A NEW SUIT. I suggest you take that as a hint.

2) Calgary Beerfest

(Source)

I got tickets for Tyler and I for Friday night. Very excited. VERY. There are so many new-to-me beers that are going to be there. I know, it’s a tough job trying all of them, but I feel I am up to the challenge. A lot of these Canadian beers have rivaled my favorites from the states, and some of them have been just awful. I checked out the list of who will be there, and some of my new faves are..so I’ll at least have some backup.

3)¬†Copycat blogging.¬†I’m actually in a good mood today, so I don’t want to bring myself down if I really get into this topic. Next!

4) At home workouts. I used to hate doing at home workouts because I either didn’t have the space or didn’t have the equipment. But now, I totally love them. I have my own room that I can sweat to my heart’s content. I’ve got my mat, my stability ball and my new weights. So many options.

5) How much I hate washing dishes. The end. I just hate it.

6) Positives and negatives of being a lefty. Positives: I got on a lot of sports teams growing up. I got the lefty desk in school. Negatives: Coaches had a hard time teaching me the ‘opposite’ way. I smudge over pretty much everything I write.

I know there are more, but I can’t think of them right now. I think I just wrote that on my list last night because I had completely smudged up some important paperwork. #fail

7) Sleeping positions. On my belly or on my side. If I am drunk, I sleep on my back with my arms over my head. Totally weird.

8) Favorite chapsticks/lip glosses/what-have-yous. Chapstick: Carmex.¬†But only in the classic stick and only in the original and cherry flavors. Strawberry? Blughk. Lip gloss: Benefit Ultra Shines. I have had just about every color and love every single one of them. What have yous: Exude Lipstick. I have the lip cream in Nude- I got it from my Birchbox a few months ago (which I had to cancel when I moved because they don’t deliver to Canada! Tears, people. Tears.)

This should be sufficient reading for you all for now..There’s a lot more to get done today!

Anyone want to rant/rave on anything? I’m all ears!
