Protein. I can’t seem to get enough of it lately. So what are my favorite ways to get it? I’ll tell you.

Ok, any nut butter really, but I just so happened to buy a ton of almonds the other day, so this is what I currently have on stash.

The flavor is great and can be enjoyed on it’s own or mixed in baked goods and smoothies.

I used to be OBSESSED with Chobani when I was living in Boston- I would have it everyday either in smoothies or mixed with fruits/grains/etc. But sadly, Chobani isn’t available here so I have resorted to Oikos.

It doesn’t disappoint. I use it in baking recipes, dips, as a topping, etc. I used it for my Dill Dip the other day, and almost every recipe for pancakes.

Raspberry Mocha Pancakes (with almond butter and coconut butter topping)

Berry Infused Pancakes

Fried or Hard Boiled are my choices. With sriracha. MMMMMmmmmmm.

Just recently, I was able to FINALLY get my hands on a box of Quest Bars. If you’re a blog reader, you might have seen these a lot lately- they have great stats (In my opinion)

Tons of fiber, tons of protein, no added sugar or artificial sweeteners, gluten free…

Yeah, I highly recommend trying these puppies (check out their website linked above to see the variety of flavors they offer)

In fact, I just had one…and it curbed my craving for sweets! SHOCKING.

Chicken, turkey, beef, pork…all protein (obviously I wouldn’t rely on bacon being a source of protein, but ya know..) I have loved being able to incorporate lean meats in our weekly meals. They are filling AND I have found they give me the oomph I need to get to my nighttime cardio sessions (Is it weird that I get the best cardio workouts late at night?!)

Here are the protein powders I have been using as of late:

  • Click (the coffee lovers protein powder)

What’s your favorite way to get protein?

2 recipes + 2 workouts

I have TWO recipes and TWO workouts to share with you. All FOUR are fantastic. (I can do maths!)

First up, the recipes. Both used my favorite protein powder, Click. Seriously, I can’t get enough of the stuff. I’ve already shared an awesome cookie recipe using Click. Now if only they sold their product in Canada, I would be so much happier.

Friday, I made an awesomely yummy smoothie.

  • 1 scoop of Click
  • 1/4 c. plain greek yogurt
  • 1 c unsweetened almond milk
  • handful of blueberries
  • handful of strawberries

It had a wonderful combination of fruit with a kick of espresso.

My second Click recipe to share with you is a concoction of chocolatey, blueberry goodness. In the form of pancakes. Oh my god, my stomach was so happy with these.

  • 1 c flour
  • 2 1/4 t baking powder
  • 1/4 t salt
  • 1 t sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/4 c unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 3/4 scoop Click
  • blueberries

For the protein frosting:

  • Plain greek yogurt
  • Unsweetened almond milk
  • Click protein powder

Pretty easy directions. Mix all the ingredients then portion it out into about 6 pancakes on the griddle. Place desired amount of blueberries on pancakes as first side is cooking. Stack when finished, top with protein frosting (you can play with the ratio of frosting ingredients for desired consistency), top with more blueberries and chia seeds.

SO GOOD, you guys!!

Now onto the workouts. On Friday, I wasn’t entirely in the mood to do the designated BBB workout, so I decided to whip up my own batch of goodies. I divvied it up between lower and upper body.

Lower Body (10 reps of each move, done 2x through)

  • Stability Ball side lunge (L)
  • Stability Ball side lunge (R)
  • Gliding reverse lunge (L)
  • Gliding reverse lunge (R)
  • Single leg squat (L)
  • Single leg squat (R)
  • Single Leg deadlift (L)
  • Single Leg deadlift (R)
  • Glute squeezes
  • Weighted plie squats

Upper Body (10 reps of each move, done 2x through)

  • Tricep Dips
  • Pushups
  • Front raise
  • Weighted Arm Circles
  • Standing overhead press/Oblique crunch (L)
  • Standing overhead press/Oblique crunch (R)
  • Kettlebell swings

I managed to get in 20 minutes of spinning just before the workout to get my heart rate up. All in all, the circuit is quick, but effective- I was sore the next morning!

Even though I was sore, I wanted to get my blood pumping on Saturday. I opted to do yet another Deck of Cards workout. (Previous Deck of Workouts can be found here and here)

  • ♠ V-sits
  • ♣ Burpees
  • ♥ Kettlebell swings
  • ♦ Pushups

I kid you not, I shuffled them almost into respective suits. I must have done about 60 pushups right off the bat, and OF COURSE, most of the burpees were at the bottom of the deck. Yikes. But totally worth it. I was sweaty and ready to have a yummy pizza for dinner. (More on that meal later!)

Anyone have a favorite protein powder? Favorite recipe to use with it??

Oreo Truffles!

Another boring recap post.

Chicken Fajitas for dinner on Tuesday. Mine with corn tortillas and Tyler’s with flour. Topped with TONS of sriracha.

Starbucks (totally a treat for me)

More coconut flour pancakes. This time I put the fruit IN the batter so everything was nice and warm. Way better that way. And I topped the stack with a combo of Click espresso protein powder and greek yogurt. That breakfast keeps me full for forever.

I hit the Calgary Farmer’s Market yesterday and got great produce (for cheap) and a treat!

Buffalo mozzarella, an eggplant, mangoes, green beens and pomegranates ($1 each!)

A maple bacon donut and a s’mores donut from Jelly Modern Donuts. Tyler and I have been meaning to get to their actual store for quite some time now, but they’re in a completely different part of Calgary that it never made sense to make the trek on a weekend morning. I saw their kiosk at the farmer’s market, and the purchase was totally on impulse. I cut them up and we tested them after our dinner last night. The verdict: turns out maple and bacon is not our preferred salty/sweet combo, but the s’mores was pretty tasty.

Speaking of Valentine’s dinner, I hit up Safeway yesterday early morning (I thought everyone would be flocking to the butcher counter for steaks, and I wanted to make sure I got two good ones for us). We had steak, asparagus and baked potatoes. One of the best-and most basic- meals ever. Honest to God, Alberta beef is out of this world dynamite. I hardly had to cut it and we only seasoned with a pinch of salt. Melt in your mouth deliciousness.

It took almost all my willpower to not inhale that steak.

I also managed to slap on an apron at some point in the day and make a special valentine’s treat for Tyler.

Oreo Truffles!

Super easy to make: Throw 36 Oreos (almost TWO packages…I swear they’re getting smaller and smaller) in the food processor until crumbled. Throw in a package of cream cheese (8 oz) and pulse until incorporated. Empty contents into a bowl and ensure the mixture is thoroughly mixed. On a double boiler, add 2 8 oz. packages of Baker’s white chocolate. Make sure to constantly stir. Roll the Oreo mixture into tablespoon sized balls, drop in the white chocolate, and fully coat. Use a fork to retrieve out of the chocolate and let cool on waxed paper. Refrigerate.

They’re not the most glamourous looking truffles, but they show the homemadeness which makes them all that much better (and WAY more thoughtful!)

I topped this batch with some rainbow sprinkles for a little decoration. You could use extra Oreo crumbles or graham crackers or nuts or….whatever!

Layla got a few Valentine treats herself! I call them Refrigerator Cookies, because she prefers the yogurt coating to be cold. (Don’t know how that was discovered, but she is a pretty spoiled dog). First, her daily morning RC stick in PINK, then a Valentine’s heart that was bigger than my hand.

Tuesday: 50 minutes of crazy intense spinning!

Wednesday: My tummy was a little agitated after dinner, so I opted out of the planned BBB workout and chose to go through 5 superset tabatas for my upper body. Apparently the pumping adrenaline helped, because I was able to round out the workout with 50 burpees!

Thursday: I did 4 miles of intervals on the treadmill.

Random Things:

Finally got new sunglasses. They look identical to my old ones. (I would use the saying If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it but in this particular case, I suppose that doesn’t fit)

I went to pick up some stuff that Tyler found on Kijiji. This woman was giving away TONS of wine and beer making equipment for free! I barely fit it all in my car.

And that’s all I have. For now.

My August Bulu Box is Here!

I lied last night. Not only do I have to mop the floors today, but I have TWO dates with furnace guys! Woo hoo! And since I know NOTHING about furnaces, other than they keep me warm, Tyler typed up a list of questions that I am just supposed to hand to these guys for quotes. Should be interesting.

But what I’m reaaaaally posting about is something I have been waiting for for about a month. And it came yesterday!

A box! Not just any box…..

Bulu Box!!!!!!!

What it is: Bulu Box sends out boxes filled with 4-5 premium vitamin and supplements samples each month for $10. Inside each box, is information on each product, as well as discounts towards full-size products.

What did I get this month?

A couple of new goodies, and one familiar one! First up, the Shower Pill

It’s an antibacterial athletic body wipe. So, when you wanna squeeze in that workout before work (or a hot date- I have TOTALLY done this in the past. We never got past the first date- probably because I stank to high heavens) this is the perfect product for you. Often times, I want to be able to save time and shower at the gym after a great workout (I will never skip a workout for anything. ANY.THING.) but I don’t want to lug a big ‘ol towel and all the toiletries that make me smell all good. It’s too much work. And I don’t want to stuff a gross wet towel back in my Lulu bag. I am totally taking the Shower Pill with me to the gym in the near future. Gotta test this puppy out!

Next up, Immuno-viva. As it says: Extreme Energy + Immune Support. I got two packets of this in my box, so I gave one a whirl yesterday.

I loved the flavor, and I definitely felt the energy boost, but I got a tummy ache afterwards. Not sure if it was because of this product, so I am going to try the other packet at a different part of the day next time to see if it yields the same effects.

Vplenish, a taste-free vitamin boost you can mix or sprinkle on just about anything! I got 4 packets of these and haven’t tried it yet. I am thinking I will pour a packet in my next smoothie. Definitely an interesting product if you hate swallowing pills.

Well here’s a familiar product! Click! Dubbed “The Coffee Lovers Protein Drink” And yes, yes it is. In fact, since I found out they don’t deliver to Canada, I had a bunch sent to my parents house, and this is how I carried it back to Calgary with me

It’s like chocolate cocaine as far as the TSA is concerned. I love this stuff. LOVE IT. I have drank it hot, cold, in smoothies, oats, muffins, you name it. I highly recommend you try this product- you will get addicted. Chelsea, I know how much you love coffee, so here’s my nudge to you! Gahhh, I have a whole canister AND a sample pack now- do I smell a giveaway? 😉

Last, but not least, Probulin. “The All-in-one Digestive Pill.” Hey, I’ll give it a try. I won a  6 month sample of Align a couple of years ago and it did absolutely nothing-when my digestion was at its worst. Now, I think I have a better handle on what I can and cannot eat to keep my stomach happy, but I am happy to try another product to see what effects it might have!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Bulu Box for existing. And for sending it to me in Canada. I am one happy lady. Can’t wait for next month’s box!

Starbucks Thinks I’m Weird

I got a late start to my workout last night, but it was a great at-home sweat session! I completed 1/2 of Bobbi‘s 20 minute Tuesday workout (weird, but it took me 20 minutes to just do half. Anyone else try this? Am I way off? I blame the altitude.) I then did a 20 min ab workout on the stability ball and some glute work on the mat (donkey kicks w/variations, froggers). Not bad considering I was about to forego the workout, but as soon as Tyler said “Ok, I’m gonna go kill a few aliens before bed,” I knew I could use that time proactively and torch some cals.

Today’s workout will have to be much more intense after wolfing down this heifer for dins last night:

We got started on painting the living room last night after those mondo sausages were scarfed. Word of advice: don’t paint in the dark; you’ll miss a ton of spots. We only got one coat on, but I’ll definitely be posting before and after pics. There really is just so. much. brown.

I used the last of my Click
protein powder yesterday (read: SO SAD! It’s hard to find and I can’t afford to order online and have it shipped to Canada! Anyone wanna help me out?!?! I need my Click! 😉 ) that said, I actually needed to brew a pot o’ coffee this AM to accompany my oats balls for breaky.

Good, but not as good as the espresso protein powder! In case you were wondering, I poured the coff coff in a juice glass because I didn’t want to keep making trips back to the kitchen. I’m way too busy watching daytime TV, talking into the internet box, and planning my day. Plus, I rather prefer lukewarm coffee. You should see the look on the Starbucks barista’s face when I order a hot coffee- half filled with iced coffee.

Methinks today is garbage day. Only because there is an obscene amount of banging going on down that weird back-alley where everyone keeps their trash bins. I’m about turn into an old bag lady and run out in my pj’s and give Mr. Garbage man a piece of my mind. Actually, who am I kidding, I’ve been up since 4:30 this morning. Prime blog reading and book reading time. Head and iPhone under the covers/pillow. Obviously. The boyfriend don’t mind, but the dog? She turns into a fury ball of bitchy when her sleep is disrupted. Perhaps she should rethink her attitude and realize she has free reign over my half of the bed, and I’m the one who suffers. Way better than the floor, dawg.

And there ya go.
